Background of the Study
Nigeria, with its rich diversity of ethnic and religious groups, has faced challenges in fostering interreligious harmony. Sokoto State, located in the north-western part of Nigeria, is home to a significant Muslim population, with Gudu LGA being an important region within the state. Religious tolerance is vital for peaceful coexistence in such regions, and television advertising presents a powerful means of conveying messages that promote understanding and acceptance between different religious communities.
Studies by Tijani and Adamu (2024) suggest that television advertising is an effective medium for promoting peace and tolerance by reaching a wide audience and influencing public attitudes toward religious diversity. In Gudu LGA, where religious tensions may arise due to misconceptions or prejudice, the role of television advertising in fostering religious tolerance requires further examination. This study seeks to explore how television advertising can be used to promote religious tolerance in Gudu LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of religious tolerance for peaceful coexistence, Gudu LGA has witnessed instances of religious intolerance and misunderstanding. Television, as a mass communication medium, has the potential to bridge these divides, but its role in promoting religious tolerance in the region remains under-researched.
Sulaimon and Yusuf (2023) argue that targeted television advertising could be instrumental in reshaping perceptions and fostering mutual respect between different religious communities. This study aims to assess the role of television advertising in promoting religious tolerance in Gudu LGA, Sokoto State.
